Uroborus, urobor-us.

Uroborus, urobor-us.

# # #

(sh)

Human ability for adaptation as cause and consequence.
Do we change our environment to give solutions and then adapt to change, or do we change just because we’re able to adapt?

When and how was the relationship inverted, that relationship according to which machines would aspire to the human condition to reach a state in which we take more and more images from the mechanical-digital work to use them to describe ourselves?

Technology as an instrument for self-saturation. How much are we able to absorb? How much virtualization can human hardware support?

The problem of density (density in time and space), a density against which one moves forward turning into a functional automaton, filtering the excess of bright colours, the excess of alarming sounds, the saturation of products in shops, of networks and “friends”, “events” and “contents”, of works and functions. By dint of marketing, have we saturated all the systems up to the point of making them uninhabitable?

The saturated farce,
of fat, of style, of stretching skin, of blatant manichaeism, of shortage without prosody, of obstinate accents, of graceless verbs, of noise in C major, of honey or coal.

In (or inside of) a sinister game or mechanism in which (or according to which) our aim is to fulfil every aim, living “to the full”, being “efficient and competitive”. Does someone (who?) regulate or direct this process?

Emerging dialemmatics: man/machine, transformation/saturation. Dualities that are in depth the same, considering man as the champion of transformations and the machine as the instrument of saturations.

Seduction of a world that, through its advantages, drags us towards its logic?

The “saturation”, defined as a situation in which solutions have turned into problems, the probable is less and less realized, and the improbable happens more and more.

Uroborus, urobor-us.

Y SIN EMBARGO magazine #25

"just a memory"

sep.oct.nov.2010

# # #

(e)

When connectivity of digital formats brings all the information within reach permanently and immediately, closed files, localized libraries, start to lose their meaning (especially their spatial meaning); they become ubiquitous.

Our memories are now the web's memories, our knowledge is in some sense still ours and is also tinged with the web's knowledge. The fact that a piece of information is in some place is enough for it to be at the same time in uncountable places and, applying communication tools, to be at the same time in more and more places. What's left of our memories then? What do they become?

The subject of this Y SIN EMBARGO is precisely memory, its forms, places, functions and posibilities, its updates upgrades, and therefore its new forms, places, functions and posibilities. And to go beyond in the logic and critical readings around these questions, the present issue will not have a permanent existence, available, as a part of the shared memory that we humans have on the web; on the contrary, it will be a work sent directly to the void, it will be lost, as a pile of organized energy in a dissipative medium, like all that we cannot download from our heads (or access anywhere),

YSE#25, just a memory, will cease existing on October 5th, 2010.

What remains in our memories?

If social networks embody the trace of the current object, is the current disenchantment the disenchantment of social networks?

An iconographic landscape as an ex-classmate meet-up in present continuous. What do I tell those I don’t know? What do I share? What for?

Does the recycling of enchantment go through the need to not leave a trace or to leave some other trace even if it’s not that of our own shoes?

Between immediacy and vertigo, weariness and redundancy, do social networks perhaps fill a crack of identities claiming to be, to be something, even if it’s just an ephemeris worryingly less empty? Is the scandalous lack of memory and past an escape towards the future? What future? That of the events some software reminds us of each time we log in, without criteria or hierarchies, in this club of friends without ID or DNA?

Our craving for the smile and despair for massage, are they a dollar-store therapy, a fellinian illusion that insists in claiming on the megaphone: yes, you can also play the leading role?
Can our demands be claimed with the “I like” policy? To what extent what’s validated is valid?
The democratizing illusion of the power of the mouse, is it a mouthwatering dish on the jaws of the ubiquitous marketing engineers?

What’s behind, on, within the narcissist exercise to publish, publish whatever? Are the means an alternative?

Take it slowly, as if it was a spirituous drink, a sedative or a Pandora’s box asking to be reenchanted to keep up with the game.

# # #

e

- What lies beneath the urge to possess?

- When there’s no other way to enjoy objects, their possession guarantees their unlimited enjoyment, without being subject to timetables, programs, ticket fares… But if we’re granted infinite availability of the object for its enjoyment, why do we still want it to be ours?

- Do we download and accumulate files because they’re free? Because it’s easy? When does desire or need of the object/file itself intervene?

- Our digital collections are fragile, subject to the quick (even sudden) deterioration of storage devices, to the constant evolution in formats. Why do we insist in keeping what is bound not to last?

- The accumulated, the possessed turns into obligation: we possess a growing collection of things waiting to be watched, listened to, read – things we didn’t really want of need when we were tempted to click and download.

- Traditional possession implied its ostentation. What shapes does virtual ostentation take? Through our lists of “favorites”, “interests”, “music I like”, “books I’ve read”… isn’t status being defined by what we know rather than by what we have?

- Or is fetish being displaced from the possession of the “object” to the possession of the “channel” for obtaining it? Do we show off our premium user accounts and our connection speed just as we used to boast about the volume occupied by our bookshelves?

- And if this is true, what does it imply? Would the business move from selling edited objects to selling channels to obtain them? Would sales be measured by “number of reproductions”? Would thus the current industrial model be perpetuated after some face-washing… or would there be more room for “independent” alternatives, whatever it means?

- Could anyone be a great virtual collector without possessing a single file in their HDD?

# # #

(e)
Prowling/auscultating the analogical medium FROM the digital medium, perhaps redefining the situation, no longer like the heirs of a former time who took part in the change, but as if the digital had always been the rule and from there we questioned the “ancient” media.

- why do we tolerate (and even look for and delight in) the precariousness and limitations of the analogical medium? Especially books.

- in order to share something from a book, we have to start by typing and uploading it, when once digitalized, the process is terribly optimized.

- what’s the point in “the book” then? Is it a gesture of privacy and refuge? A relief? A denial?

- what sense does it make to hoist the validity (apparently as a sheer archaic, retrograde fetish) of a medium that does not have a tenth of the reach and the possibilities of the digital medium (through the net, of course)?

- what dictions have been historically woven, until the digital era, around works presented as an absolute finished, definitive, inalterable, individual, unipersonal and ultimate, due to the limitations of the analogical?

(Its difficult alteration, alliteration, reutilization or recycling.
That eternal sensation of a finished thing, closed, definitive and definitely: still).

- how much of that romance with books is supported by misreading, by ingenuously and fallaciously “romantic” conceptions?

- does the digital evidence a transit formerly hindered by the limitations of a precarious medium?

- wouldn’t it be necessary to serioulsy question the book’s hierarchical position?

- what sense does the tangible thing make when technology has made it unnecessary?

- what urgent revisions does the work-format, message-medium dialogue demand?

- does the digital refine the work, forcing it, cornering it towards the transit and volatility that it deserves?
